El Centro and The South

Villalba and Coamo

Adjuntas and Jayuya
The Cordillera Central, made up of mountains, waterfalls, caves, and rivers, is an incomparable side of Puerto Rico that goes unexplored by many. Contrary to the rest of the island, El Centro offers acres of undeveloped beauty and an authentic Puerto Rican experience. Once a major producer of sugar on the island, maintaining huge sugarcane plantations, the South acquired great wealth that can be seen especially in Ponce with its beautiful architecture.
Directions: Take Rt 10 N from Ponce, right onto Rt 123 N, then drive until you reach Rt 123 S and make a left. Go south for a while, then make a right onto Rt 522 and follow the signs to Parador Sotomeyer, then make a left, continue until you see the parked cars
Early morning:
-
Las Garzas Waterfalls: These swimming holes in Adjuntas has some of the most spectacular nature in Puerto Rico. As I must admit, the interior can be quite ambitious to reach but the destination is worth the trouble.
There are no signs for Las Garzas making it a challenge to find. The best thing is to ask the locals. They will most likely tell you where there are cars parked that will be the entrance down to the waterfalls.

Walk down a dirt path onto a mountain of rocks and you will immediately see people bathing in a small water hole with a waterfall splashing on their heads, people dunking themselves in a bigger water hole below the waterfall and finally, young Puerto Ricans cliff-diving, drinking Medalla and swimming on top long logs in a more extensive swimming hole way in the bottom. Paradise!

Directions: Route 144

Afternoon:
-
Piedra Escrita: A river that holds thousands of years of Taino history, has boulders with petroglyphs carved on them. The high-elevated boardwalk leading to the river is surrounded by miles of greenery. At the end of the long boardwalk, you will see the crystal clear spring water and courageous locals diving from the petroglyph boulder.
Directions: Take Rt 52 E from Ponce to Carr 149 N
Early morning:
-
Toro Negro Forest Reserve: Composing of two worthwhile attractions: Charco la Confesora and Salto Doña Juana. Located in the reserve, el charco is on the way up to la piscina (the pool). Since the pool is closed, my mom and I decided to take a dip into the possibly below zero spring water river. After a while you become numb to it and it becomes quite refreshing.

We then decided to take Carr 149 to check out Salto Doña Juana, a powerful waterfall located on this road, where you have to climb down many rocks to get to the bottom. We dived in the freezing water, happy to have experienced what many tourists do not enjoy - the interior!

Directions: Take Rt 52 E from Ponce to Carr 153 N
Afternoon:
-
Baños de Coamo: Legend has it that Juan Ponce de León was seeking los Baños de Coamo because it was known as the fountain of youth. The Tainos believed the springs had healing powers.
The now renovated Hotel Baños de Coamo offers guests 48 air conditioned rooms, an elegant dining room, poolside bar, swimming pools and the hot thermal baths known to be the most ancient of the Americas. Rooms range from $76.30-$92.65. If you want to just use the thermal baths, it's $10/person for the day.
Note: If you walk down the hotel to the left, the public thermal baths are located there for $2/person. It is smaller but the perfect time to chat with the locals.

Cayey
Cayey is known to make the best lechón in the whole island.
Directions: Take Rt 52 N from Ponce to Carr 184
Lunch at Noon:
-
Lechonera Los Pinos: Drive the twisty, windy mountain roads of Cayey to eat some of the most authentic Puerto Rican food ever. Los Pinos' is a simple decorated restaurant with a not so simple burst of Caribbean flavored food. The roasted pig, friendly staff, drinks, music and cheap prices makes it heaven on Earth. Note: There are many other lechoneras on the strip that are just as good. Barrio Guavate, Carr. 184, Km. 27.7
-
Tetas de Cayey: You will know you are in Cayey, when you see a mountain shaped as two bosoms. Spot it and take a picture on the side of the mountain road.

Guayama and Arroyo
Directions: Rt 15 from Cayey to Guayama
-
Guayama is not a popular town to visit but there are still things to see such as the family-operated butterfly sanctuary, Reserva Natural Mariposario Las Limas and a fine arts center, Centro de Bellas Artes.
Directions: Rt 15 from Guayama then Rt 3 to Arroyo
-
Arroyo is also a small with not much to experience but the close-knit community and friendly people. Many festivals and events are held throughout the year. Check out the Qué Pasa! magazine for their dates.
