Travel Packing List When Backpacking
When backpacking the Caribbean, or backpacking in general, it is essential to make a packing list. Backpacking is different than going to an all-inclusive resort for a week. Because you will be traveling from place to place constantly, it is always better to pack light, particularly if you are carrying a backpack, unless you decide to backpack with a suitcase...like I did. Yes, I came up with a whole phrase for it...suitcasing it. Not only did I have a suitcase, I also had a carry-on, two-wheel roller. How the men riding motorcycle taxis in the Dominican Republic transported me, my heavy suitcase and carry-on all at once is inexplicable. It's definitely a talent.
Here are some tips on what to pack:
Sunscreen: When you travel to the Caribbean, whether it's for one month, one week or one day, make sure to bring sunscreen. I traveled for three months and only really needed to a 10.8 fl oz bottle or two 3 fl oz tubes.
Medication: Not saying anyone is crazy! No. I mean such over-the-counter pills as Advil or Midol. In many places outside the United States, you may not be able to find such things.
Bug Spray: Mosquitoes are so fierce that this may not help but its always worth having. Make sure to buy one that is unscented. I noticed mosquitoes are attracted to bug spray that have scent.
Travel Diary: If you are traveling for a long time, it's always great to record what you are going through! It's especially interesting when you look back at it months or years later. It's also written proof, you lived your life!!!
Camera: This is on top of the list. Do not leave home without it. It is picture proof, that you lived your life!
Light clothes: The Caribbean is hot year-round so pack light, summery dresses, linen shorts and pants, tank-tops, t-shirts, flip-flops, boots (especially if you plan to go to Haiti and/or hike), one towel, a pair of nice shoes to go out, sunglasses, one belt, one nice purse, and a sweater (in case it gets chilly at night).
Hygiene Products: Bringing products such as shampoo, deodorant, soap, etc. is totally optional. I am not saying to not take a bath, though! I am saying you can buy these products in the country you will be traveling. It may be cheaper, but they may also not have the brands you use, so it's totally up to you. Unless, you just bring a bottle of coconut oil and use that for everything!
Lock: You need this to protect your belongings, especially in hostels when sharing the same space. Bring at least two.
Money/Money Belt: This is obvious, but make sure to bring enough money. Many travelers like to carry a money belt. I personally don't care for it. I just always carried my money in my front pocket, and never my purse.
Pepper Spray/Mace: Whether you are a male or female, make sure to carry something that can protect you if anything happens. I ALWAYS carried my mace everywhere with me.
DO NOT pack:
Expensive jewelry: When you are traveling for a long time or even for a short time, do not bring jewelry that you might never see again and especially do not wear them. My very thin, fake chain was snatched off my neck while I was riding a scooter in Puerto Plata - so NO jewelry!
Cellphone/iPod/iPad/Laptop: When I was in the Caribbean, my cellphone and iPod were stolen in a week. Trust me, especially when backpacking, you won't need any of this because 1) you will be too busy having fun with other people, and 2) you are getting away, especially from technology that consumes our lives. Later, I will write a post on how to get a cell phone in these three islands.
Credit Cards: Bringing credit cards is totally optional, however, paying cash for everything would be ideal because 1) you won't owe anything at the end of your trip, and 2) you do won't have to worry about scams with credit cards, getting overcharged or paying extra fees.
I hope this helped!
Until next time...
Saludos!
