A few weeks ago I went to an informative travel event hosted by Hostelling International in New York City. The panel of speakers, two of which included the founder of WeHostels and the Community Manager of Airbnb.com, provided useful budget travel tips including information on several travel phone apps that are ruling the world and can make travel easier!

Below is a continued list of Cool, Free Apps to Make Traveling Easier:

Transportation and Travel Planning Apps

Hipmunk is a useful travel app that consolidates time and search results. When you are on the go, and looking for flights, this app will give you the best flights available in an instant, instead of having to browse through unnecessary, time-consuming results.

Tripit is a great app for travel planning. They help you create an itinerary so you won't have to. It would be like your very own personal travel agent. You can access your plans anywhere and anytime online or on a mobile device.

Rome 2 Rio is a one-of-a-kind and very much needed source on how to get ANYWHERE, using everything! This app not only provides information for flights but other forms of transportation such as trains, buses, ferries and car.

Be Informed Apps

Flyrights is a quick and easy way to report complaints against air travel discrimination in real time. I understand many travelers do not want to think about what can go wrong but just know there is an app that exists for such incidents.

Everyone knows about Yelp, right?! This is a reminder that they are a great source to find reviews on restaurants, clubs, hotels and everything else you can think is rated. Since you are travelers you might just ask locals what is good in the area but this app can be a backup.

CNN is a great source for travel news. Always stay informed about what is going on in the world, especially your travel destination. They also have a CNN Latino section which is focused on news in Latin America and the Caribbean. Other Much Needed Apps GeoLatin is a friendly app where your knowledge of geography is tested. Many people who travel to Latin America and the Caribbean do not even know where their destination is on a map. Play this game a few times and you will know it with your eyes closed! Flashlight app. This might be funny to many, but having a flashlight on your phone could be the smartest thing you have. The Caribbean is known to have random blackouts. I experienced several while backpacking, so always be prepared! Google Translate as you may know, is a resource that translates phrases and words from one language to another. What this app also has is a 'Starred' feature which allows you to save phrases such as, 'How are you?' You can then look back at your Starred list and sound like a pro! Until next time... Saludos!

I decided to create this website when I was researching how to backpack the 'authentic' Caribbean on a budget but instead I found scattered information on various websites. I wanted to concentrate all of my knowledge I gathered throughout my experiences on one website. I hope you enjoy it and it helps in your travels!
