Cool, Free Apps to Make Traveling Easier

Many travelers are not aware that there are very cool, free apps to download that would make travel more convenient, especially if you have access to WIFI. Of course this means you would be traveling with your phone, which is totally up to you.

Flight and Accomodation Apps

Skyscanner is one of the best flight search apps for budget traveling. It compares millions of flights over 1000 airlines. It's coolest feature allows you to choose 'Everwhere' as a go to destination. This means the app will search for prices of flights anywhere in the world.

Booking hostels has never been easier! On Wehostels, you can find hostels near you or before you travel to your destination, check out pictures and info of each hostel and chat with people staying at your hostel. You will never be stranded!

On Airbnb, you can search for bed and breakfast inns in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and anywhere else in the world. You can instantly book on the app and/or contact directly from your phone. If you need a place to stay the same night, the 'Help! I need a place, tonight!' tab searches for B 'n' Bs near you.

Things to do Apps

Caribbean Cinemas, in both the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, offer interesting Latin American and Caribbean films. You can look up movies, showtimes and theater locations near you. Note: For movies in the DR, a different app needs to be downloaded.

The Yoga+Travel app allows you to practice yoga on the go. It is a well-structured verbal online class with still illustrations. The teacher, Allison English, with her soothing, clear voice starts off with stretching and then a full on yoga class. You can do yoga on a quiet spot on the beach or anywhere you like, anywhere in the world!

Learning the language of the country you are traveling to is important to grasping the culture. Speak Spanish - for Survival and Travel and French Creole for Aid Workers, by Brainscape are two helpful apps for just this!

Fun Apps

Send a postcard directly from your phone with Postagram for only $.99. You can customize your own postcard by choosing a photo from your phone, Instagram or Facebook and add a personalized message. The first five postcards are free.

Travelog is like Instagram but for traveling. Create your own travel journal blog right on your phone. Share your traveling moments, connect with other travelers and discover new places and beautiful cities. Then look back on it all and reminisce.

Everyone knows about Skype but I discovered the Google Voice and GTalk app from the owner of the guesthouse I was staying at in Port-au-Prince. With active Wifi, all texting and calls to ANY phone number in the US & Canada are free!
